Subject: "Very High" Fire Restrictions to remain

Fire Restrictions and danger level will remain at "Very High" despite
recent rainfall.

1.  Grass crop will dry out in 2-3 days of 80-90 degree heat

2.  Chaparral will not show effects of this storm until January or February

3.  Rainfall has been inconsistent throughout the forest, anywhere from .4" to 1.5"

4.  Wind events expected

History factoid,   In 1980, two weeks prior to the Panorama Fire, the
forest experienced 5" of rain and 2-4" of snow.

1. Fire marshal gives warning to state planners
10/30/05
By Guy McCarthy, SB Staff Writer

San Bernardino County's fire marshal warned a statewide gathering of land-use planners last week not to make some of the mistakes this county has in creating unsafe neighborhoods in the midst of overgrown forests.
"The density of the populations we have in the San Bernardino Mountains is basically high-density housing tracts with trees growing through them," county Fire Marshal Peter Brierty said.

3. Leaders fault Bush plan to cut wildfire funds
Guy McCarthy, Staff Writer
11/01/2005

Local forest and fire-safety leaders joined Rep. Jerry Lewis, R-Redlands, and Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., Tuesday in criticizing a Bush administration proposal to meet Hurricane Katrina costs by cutting $500 million from wildland firefighting fund reserves.

"Nationwide maybe they can do that, but here in Southern California we have serious fire problems," said Gerald Newcombe, president of the Arrowhead Community Fire Safe Council and former San Bernardino fire chief.
