Editor's Note

Thank you to everyone for sending in your contractor referrals.  I have been posting them to the website for others to reference.

Since we are looking for a contractor for my mom as we speak I have even been calling them myself.  As for the status on my mom's house, we did get comments back from the city building department in 5 working days just like they promised, but since there is a one year deadline to finish the project once the permit is finalized, we are kind of waiting to get some bids in from the contractors (or at least some comments) before we finalize the permit.  We hope it will not take a year to complete the house, but... you never know... you have to plan for everything you can!

Thanks again for everyone's help with this!

1. Help in "City Hall"
---
I have been in contact with Robert Houts who works in the City Code Enforcement department.  He is very interested in helping fire survivors in any way he can.  He even said he would try to do anything he could to help people in the county.

If you have an issue that you can't seem to get resolved try calling him to see if he can be of assistance.  His number is 909-384-5241

Call him for:
 -removing burnt material from property
 -removing brush and debris
-keep in touch and give address updates in case the city needs to contact you with any type of code enforcement information
-basically a contact in city hall for anything else you can think of

If you remember in my last update, Peggi Hazlett from the Mayor's office said they were not draining pools or contracting with anyone to drain pools.  Robert confirmed this, but said they are trying to setup a program to drain swimming pools in the near future.  But before anyone is sent to your property, you will receive ample notice that it will happen and you will have the opportunity to respond to say you have done it yourself.  If someone shows up without notice please get their contact information and check into it.

Recently I found a 13 page booklet "Are You Underinsured".  This might be helpful if you are trying to explain underinsurance to friends or loved one's (or even to yourself!).

When it comes to homeowners insurance, no one wants to buy it, no one wants to be forced to use it and that's precisely why the industry gets away with it, according to watchdogs of the homeowner insurance agency.

Insurance Checkup: A Special Report
Gregory Crofton, gcrofton@tahoedailytribune.com
February 21, 2005
While Tom Davis knew the threat of wildfire is real to the region, it took lessons learned from two friends living outside the basin who lost their homes to fire for the former South Lake Tahoe mayor to upgrade his insurance policy.
