Electricity discounts for fire survivors using a temporary power pole

I have been working with Neil Derry who is the city councilman for our area and who also works at Edison on an issue that I just got a WONDERFUL answer to!

If you or anyone you know is living on their lot in a trailer and is drawing power off of a temporary power pole, you might not realize that you are being charged a HIGHER rate than if you were living in your house.  They have JUST instituted a new policy where you can now be charged the regular residential rate PLUS get a CREDIT for the difference between the higher and lower rate for all power used on the site since the fire!!!

Please let everyone know that they need to contact Neil Derry to apply for this new program.  His number at Edison is 909-930-8501 and his email address is Neil.derry@sce.com

Work with a state senator to tell your story in a major magazine

State Senator Hollingsworth (from the San Diego area) is in contact with a major publication who wants to write a story about fire survivors who were able to save their house through mitigating natural dangers even though the government had restrictions regarding the clearing of land or removing certain trees.

They also want to talk to people who actually lost their house because they were told they could NOT clear their land, remove a tree (for example if it was on government property).  This would include people who say they lost their house because of the olive trees on Del Rosa.  I have also heard rumors that the fire spread through the wash system which was not cleared due to some endangered species that lived there.

If you think you fit this profile please contact me 909-266-1459 info@oldfirerecoverygroup.org or Tom Rogers with Senator Hollingsworth's office at 951-676-1020 or email him at Thomas.Rogers@SEN.CA.GOV.

Second "Wall Raising" ceremony for Rebuild San Bernardino County

The Hipolito family, volunteer construction crews, Board members, and staff of REBUILD SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY are delighted to announce a “Wall-Raising” ceremony scheduled for Saturday, February 12, 2005 at noon, to which you are cordially invited.  The construction site is located at: 25352 Los Flores Drive, San Bernardino 92404.

Come experience the exciting moment when an actual framed wall is raised, symbolizing the commencement of the long journey back from the destruction of lives and property caused by the 2003 California Wildfires.

Besides celebrating the rebuilding, the homeowner is also celebrating his birthday, which means we will have a delicious cake courtesy of Stater Bros., San Bernardino!  A special check presentation by the Allstate Foundation will also take place.  Our dedicated construction volunteers are provided by Horizon Milling and Habitat for Humanity.

Come join us – rain or shine – for this joyous occasion!

Free seminars for Fire Survivors

I know this isn't in San Bernardino but it might be very valuable.  I think the address is 9841 Vine Street Lakeside, CA 92040, but email David (email address at bottom of message) to be sure.  When I mapped it from Del Rosa, Map Quest said it was 110 miles.

Mark Hanson has scheduled his seminars on management and organizations in the Lakeside Community center.  These executive level seminars are free, along with materials and leather bound planner, to Fire Folks, courtesy of the Heartland Foundation.

The first seminar on "effective personal productivity" is scheduled for February 22nd 6:00 to 9:00 PM in the Lakeside community center.  You will need to CALL AHEAD to reserve your materials at 619-261-7180 or e-mail Mark at mark.hanson@friends.grossmont.net.

There will be two more seminars as well.  One is on effective communication and the other is on Finance.  There is also on-line coaching and instruction available through September.

This Thursday, you have the opportunity to learn many different things.  From how you can build a house without money, to the processes involved.

I am looking forward to seeing you all there.  If it has been a while since you have come, just come to visit.  Perhaps you will find more than you expected.

Best regards,
David Kassel davidlkassel@yahoo.com

Dear Friends,

I am writing to you because the tragedy you have endured has also given you experience and knowledge that can help prevent others from facing the legal morass that fire survivors of 2003 have endured.

With your support, last year my Senate Bill 64, which created a mediation program for fire survivors and insurers, became law.  This bill’s success was a testament to the selflessness and dedication of fire survivors who put aside their own personal challenges to change a dysfunctional insurance system.  Whether by personal appearance or by your many moving letters and e-mails, your strength through adversity and willingness to change the status quo was an inspiration to many hardened veterans of the Sacramento scene.  Now, I ask for your assistance again.

As you may know, on November 15, 2004, I held a Senate Insurance Committee hearing in El Cajon.  Many of you came and shared your frustrations with an insurance system that seems to make you the enemy just for trying to recover the funds owed you, insurance which you have paid for over many, many years.  I want you to know that that testimony was not in vain.  From that hearing and contacts before and since, my office has been able to directly assist many fire survivors in San Diego and San Bernardino Counties with their insurance claims.

I listened to your stories and reviewed what we learned from assisting in these insurance cases, and came back to Sacramento determined to fix this dysfunctional system.  As a result of fire survivors’ testimony at public forums and during Insurance Committee hearings last year, I have introduced Senate Bill 2

In short, SB 2 eliminates the needs for contents lists (personal property inventory), guarantees personal property limits in the event of a total loss, extends Alternative Living Expenses (ALE) in cases of a “state of emergency” to 24 months, sets up oversight for the use of computer cost-evaluation software by the insurance industry, and ensures a minimum level of training for insurance agents so that they are better qualified to determine whether a policy is adequate for rebuilding costs.  You can view the text of the bill and check its status by going to this link:

www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/postquery?bill_number=sb_2&sess=CUR&house=B&author=speier.

Our first hearing will be in the Senate Banking, Finance and Insurance Committee, which I chair.  Nonetheless, if we can show an overwhelming groundswell of support in this Committee, it will make it easier to encourage bipartisan cooperation on this important bill.  Please send letters of support for SB 2 to the Senate Banking, Finance, and Insurance Committee, State Capitol, Room 2032, Sacramento, CA, 95814, or you may e-mail the Chief Consultant to the Committee, Brian Perkins, at brian.perkins@sen.ca.gov

Again, please accept my heartfelt appreciation for all that you have already done, and for what you will do in the future, so that those who face this tragedy in the future will not have to endure what the survivors of the 2003 firestorms have had to live through.

All the best,

Senator Jackie Speier

Chair, Senate Banking, Finance & Insurance Committee
